The Importance of Regularly Dusting and Vacuuming

When it comes to regularly cleaning parts of your home, certain areas can get glossed over. Some cleaning tasks don’t seem as important as others and you may find yourself skipping parts of your home that don’t feel as necessary. Dusting and vacuuming are two of the most important cleaning habits you should be doing on a regular basis.

Why You Need to Regularly Vacuum and Dust Your Home

Help with Allergies

Allergies can be hard to deal with, especially during peak seasons such as spring or fall. This can result in unwanted sneezing and coughing as well as just a general unwell feeling. There are certain precautions you can take to avoid allergens or get rid of them but regularly dusting and vacuuming can be a huge help. Dusting all your surfaces can get rid of allergens such as dust mites, pet dander and fur, and pollen. Vacuuming goes hand in hand with dusting. Vacuuming can collect all the allergens and debris that you often can’t see, leaving you feeling more clear and healthy.

Enhances the Appearance of Your Home

The appearance of your home is important to help you fully enjoy your space. You took the time and money to buy your home, furnish it and get it just the way you like it. So when you aren’t dusting it on a regular basis, it can cause your items to not look as nice. You may not be aware of it now but if you take the time to dust over dressers, tables, counters, and knick-knacks, you will notice how much nicer your home looks. Vacuuming can improve the other parts of your home such as your carpet and baseboards. Regularly vacuuming the floors can improve the overall look of each room and make the carpets last longer.

Improves the Air Quality of Your Home

Air quality is very important for your health, especially if someone is affected by asthma or other upper respiratory conditions. If not properly taken care of, the air in your home can hold allergens, dust mites, pet dander, and mold. You can do things such as changing your air filter regularly, but routinely dusting the surfaces, as well as vents in your home, can do wonders for your air quality.

Simple Vacuum and Dusting TipsPerson vacuuming a rug

Here are some helpful dusting and vacuuming tips for your home that will have your home looking and feeling great!

Tip 1 – Start from the top and work your way down

This might seem, self-explanatory, but the best way to dust your home is to start at the highest point in a room and work your way down.  Start in the corner of the room and work your way around, going from top to bottom in sections.

Tip 2 – Use microfiber cloths over a duster

Microfiber towels pick up dust, whereas a duster simply pushes it around. Take a microfiber cloth and multi surface spray to your dusty areas.  Hero tip: you can use a coffee filter on computer or TV screens, too!

Tip 3 – Clean the dirtiest room first

Get your hardest task out of the way so when you’re tired of cleaning, you have the most daunting part behind you. Whether it’s dusting ceiling fans or vacuuming stairs, this tip can apply to both dusting and vacuuming.

Tip 4 – Use a pillowcase to dust ceiling fans

Place the pillowcase on the ceiling fan blade and collect the dust. This way the dust is contained in the pillowcase instead of floating in the air or falling to the ground. After that, simply toss the pillowcase in the washer!

Tip 5 – Start at the furthest corner of your room

This helps you avoid stepping on a part of the floor you may have already vacuumed. You essentially want to vacuum toward the door or entrance to the room, or vacuum your way out of the room.

Tip 6 – Keep the windows closed

Opening the windows, especially during spring, can let in dust and debris. As a result, your house can become dirty more easily and also aggravate allergies you or those living in your home have.

Tip 7 – Brush pets often

Regularly brushing your pets (outside) can lead to them shedding less, which causes less fur and dander, meaning less dusting and vacuuming.

Tip 8 – Clean the barrel at the bottom of the vacuum

Keeping your vacuum well maintained will not only make it last longer, but also will keep it working more efficiently.  Hair can get caught in the barrel or brush and stop the vacuum from performing correctly. It can also make the vacuum smell like it’s burning if not cleaned regularly. To clean, first unplug your vacuum and then remove the roller. Untangle any hair or threads by using small scissors, taking care not to cut the bristles on the roller (or yourself).  Then clean the roller and bristles with a small brush or toothbrush. If it’s very dirty, you can even run it under water in your kitchen sink.  Just make sure it is completely dry before placing it back in the vacuum.
