How to Prepare for a Deep Cleaning Session

The spring season brings longer days, warmer weather, and the overall feeling of starting a new chapter. For many, that means deep cleaning your home to get it feeling clean and fresh after a period of hibernation. While the product of deep cleaning sounds nice, the anticipation leading up to it can be daunting. Many of us end up putting it on the back burner for as long as possible, or even all together avoiding it!

Home Clean Heroes has some helpful tips to get you started with deep cleaning your home, so that it will be sparkling for the warmer days ahead!

Set Aside a Stretch of Time

While you don’t necessarily need to carve out an entire weekend to tackle your big cleaning session, you should at least plan ahead for a longer period or two that will allow you enough time to make a large dent in your cleaning. Many people underestimate how much time it takes to clean, and not anticipating this ahead of time can leave you feeling overwhelmed mid-clean, which no one wants! By planning ahead, you can leisurely clean to your favorite playlist and get in the zone rather than constantly racing the clock.

Gather Your Cleaning Supplies

Round up your cleaning solutions and materials ahead of time so that once you get in that cleaning groove, you don’t have to keep pausing to dig through closets and look for cleaning supplies. Get that out of the way up front so you can seamlessly transition from task to task. A few items you’ll probably need that you can pull out are cleaning solutions (all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, wood cleaner), microfiber cloths, sponges, scrub brushes, vacuum, broom, and trash bags. To further simplify, gather and carry your supplies in tote or bucket so you can move everything from one room to the next easily.

Declutter Before the Deep Clean

It might sound silly to clean before you clean, but removing clutter around the house ahead of your deep clean will help speed up the process. Some ideas to get you started are throwing away trash throughout the house, tackling the stack of junk mail, and putting away that pile of laundry taking over the corner of your bedroom. Not having to clean around a bunch of clutter will get the momentum going much more quickly, and will make the task at hand less daunting.

Hero tip: Set a timer for 10 minutes – you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can declutter. Repeat a few times (or over the course of a few days) before you tackle the cleaning.

Start from the Top Down

Begin with the higher surfaces, such as dusting ceiling fans and wiping cabinets, before working your way down to cleaning counter tops and tables. Eventually hit the floors as the last step so that unwanted crumbs and dust don’t make their way to the floor after you’ve already swept and mopped. This will save you from having to clean surfaces multiple times and will overall leave your space cleaner.

Go Beyond Surfaces

If you’re doing a full-fledged deep clean of your home, this is also the perfect opportunity to focus on some of those easy to skim over spots: the refrigerator, oven, microwave, and pantry to name a few. They might not be the most fun to clean, but are just as important to give a little TLC to. You can even dedicate a separate time to these areas in order to break it up a bit and avoid getting overwhelmed.

Reward Yourself for a Job Well Done

Cleaning is exhausting work, so after tackling a huge deep clean, it’s time to treat yourself! Breathe a sigh of relief, order takeout and relax in your newly cleaned space.
